Wayne's Run Comes To An End In Class AA Semifinals
The Wayne Pioneers saw their historic run come to an end as they fell to the top ranked Wheeling Central Catholic Maroon Knights on Friday in the West Virginia Class AA semifinals at the Charleston Civic Center.
After both teams traded buckets early, Wheeling Central (22-0) was able to score a few baskets late to take a 24-16 lead after the opening quarter. The Maroon Knights kept adding to the lead behind the dynamic play of Eli Sancomb and held a 46-31 advantage at the intermission.
Wheeling Central's lead continued to grow in the second half, and the Pioneers (16-10) were unable to close the gap.
For Wayne, Colton Heck closed out his high school career with 29 points. Landon Preece and Colton Preece followed with 7 points apiece. Stephen Montoya added 6 points. Ross Carter and Andrew Dotson finished with 2 points each.
Wheeling Central was led by Liberty University signee Eli Sancomby with 41 points, 6 rebounds and 10 assists. Max Olejasz added 19 points.
This was Wayne's first ever trip to the state tournament, and the Pioneers have a bright future moving forward. Congratulations to the Wayne Pioneers from all of us at D&D Sports Network!
