Wayne Makes Big Impression In Boys State Tourney Debut
The 5th seed Wayne Pioneers had a dazzling state tournament debut as they defeated the 4th seed Doddridge County Bulldogs, 72-48, in the West Virginia Class AA Boys State Tournament on Tuesday morning at the Charleston Civic Center.
The Pioneers (16-9) got off to a great start and held a slim 16-13 lead. They then exploded in the second quarter to take a 37-18 advantage into the locker room at the intermission. Wayne extended the lead to 63-39 heading into the final period. They cruised from there.
Wayne was led by Landon Preece with 29 points and 10 rebounds, including shooting 4-of-5 on three-point field goals. Colton Heck followed with 21 points. Colton Preece added 10 points. Carter Ross had 9 points and 7 assists. Kaiden Hayton scored 1 point and grabbed 12 rebounds.
For Doddridge County (19-5), Heston Hayes led the way with 12 points.
Wayne will now play the winner of Wheeling Central and Frankfort in the semifinal round on Friday at 1 pm.
