Lady Pioneers Heading Back To Charleston

The Wayne Lady Pioneers punched their ticket to to the West Virginia Girls State Basketball Tournament on Thursday in a 53-44 win over the Logan Lady Wildcats in front a packed house and rowdy crowd at Wayne High School in the Class AA Region IV Co-Final.

In an intense game that had the feel of a heavyweight fight, Logan (15-8) came out firing and took a 15-11 lead after the opening quarter. The second period saw the lead change several times before the Lady Wildcats took a 25-22 lead into the locker room at the half. 

Wayne (17-6) was able to make some big plays in the third quarter to take a 42-41 lead heading into the final period of play. The Lady Pioneers finished with a strong defensive effort, holding Logan to just three points in the fourth quarter as they were able to get the win.

Jayce Sammons led the Lady Pioneers with 22 points. Lexi Blankenship followed with 18 points. Jaycee Mills followed with 7 points. Megan Thompson fired in 4 points. Maddie Dillon chipped in with 2 points. 

For Logan, Jerzee White led the way with 18 points. Miley Fleming netted 10 points. Jenna Hatfield scored 7 points. Journey Blair netted 5 points. Lanie Watkins and Preecely "Foo" Decker finished with 2 points each. 

Wayne was given the 6th seed in the upcoming Class AA state tournament and will face the 3rd seed Wheeling Central on Wednesday at the Charleston Civic Center at 11:15 am.
